Disclaimer: This post is NOT about spiritual Gurus but business speakers who call themselves “Gurus”.

I am currently reading the book “The Millionaire Fastlane”. If you haven’t heard of it yet get your hands on it quickly. The author makes a point to double check how financial guru’s have accumulated their wealth. Did they do so in the way they are teaching us or somehow differently?

It’s worth taking some time to think about and analyse some Guru stuff. It has blown my mind.

What’s wrong with a business Guru?

The definition of a Guru is “an influential teacher or popular expert”. OK, that’s great but who proofs whether what is prayed and taught is valid? How do we know that their claimed expert status is given? Is it real because of a best selling number of books (and because of the work of their marketing team)? When someone is nominated as a Guru this implies that this person “own the field”. Leading expert. But we are all unique, right? And disruption and innovation can only exist when we try out new ways. When we do things differently.

Why not stick with role models?

Rather than copying a style of a Guru we could also pick a couple of people we admire as our role models. This way we would simply diversify our “admiration portfolio” and could pick what we love most about this person, the idea, the style … And we would keep the freedom to actually enrich our personal uniqueness with single features and do not try to transform into someone else. And none of us wants to be a copycat anyways, right?
